Getting Started
What is Encrypted-Mail?

Encrypted-Mail is the world's first, fully encrypted, free Web-based email service. Encrypted-Mail's state-of-the-art technology keeps our users' online communications private. Free and easy to use, Encrypted-Mail works similarly to other Web-based email providers, except Encrypted-Mail offers the security of 2,048-bit encryption between Encrypted-Mail users. With Encrypted-Mail, users can access their mail account from any computer that has an internet connection, a web browser and Java.

Glossary

  • Java applet
In the simplest terms, a Java applet is a mini-program that exists inside a Web browser, like Netscape or Internet Explorer. The Java applet that Encrypted-Mail uses allows email messages to be encrypted and signed before being sent to the Internet.

  • Encryption
Encryption is a mechanism designed to protect sensitive information. Encryption that protects digital information works by scrambling and encoding information so that the proper recipient is the only party who reads an email message.

  • Public/Private Key Cryptography (Key pairs)
A cryptographic method that uses a two-part key (code) that is made up of public and private components. To encrypt messages, the published public keys of the recipients are used. To decrypt the messages, the recipients use their unpublished private keys known only to them.

  • SSL (Secure Sockey Layer)
A protocol from Netscape Communications Corporation which is designed to provide secure communications on the Internet. SSL is a protocol that encrypts data during its transfer from one point to another. Data is encrypted at point A, sent across a network, and decrypted at point B. If you send a message over SSL, it will arrive at the designated server, be decrypted, and remain there unprotected until taken off of the server.

Browser / Java compatibility

Encrypted-Mail services require that one of the following Java Virtual Machines (VM) be installed on your computer to run our Java applet, the HushEncryptionEngine™.

  • Sun Java 2 plugin (Sun)
    • This plugin can be used across most browsers and operatings systems. Examples below use version 1.4.1_02 or later.
    • Windows users can verify whether or not the Sun plugin is installed on their computer:
      1. Click on Start Menu
      2. Select "Settings", and then click on "Control Panel".
      3. In the new window which appears, locate an icon featuring a coffee cup (pictured below) labelled "Java Plug-in".
    • You can download the latest version at http://www.java.com

  • Microsoft Virtual Machine (MSVM)
    • Comes installed by default with all versions of Windows (98/NT/2K/ME) except Windows XP.
    • At the time of writing, Windows XP Service Pack 1 does not install the Microsoft VM, and new XP users are recommended to install the Sun Java 2 plugin.
    • Users with existing installations of the MSVM can upgrade to the most recent version at http://www.windowsupdate.com

  • Netscape VM (NS)
    • Installed by default in old versions of Netscape Communicator, ie: 4.7x

  • Encrypted-Mail / Macintosh compatibility requirements
We're very happy to announce that Mac users are now able to use Encrypted-Mail's web services! Compatibility requirements are:
    1. Your operating system must be Mac OS X version 10.3+
    2. Your browser must be Safari version 1.2+
    3. Your virtual machine must be Sun's Java plug-in version 1.4.2+

  • The latest version of Safari (v1.2) has implemented LiveConnect, which is required for JavaScript / Java communication. Thanks to the Safari development team for a great job, and our customers for their patience. The wait is over - sign up now!

After reviewing the above compatibility requirements, please contact us with any account issues that you may encounter.

It is our hope that LiveConnect will be implemented in a future version of Mozilla. If you'd like to support development of the Mozilla project, please visit their donation page for more information!

VirtualPC on Mac is reported to load Encrypted-Mail without a problem.

  • Notes:
    * Installations of Netscape 7.0x for Windows, prior to 7.02, were packaged with Java 1.3, which is not compatible with certain features of Encrypted-Mail and needs to be upgraded!
** Netscape Communicator 4.7x is being deprecated (ie: no longer available for download from the Netscape website). Please consider upgrading your browser.
*** Recommendations for installing Mozilla 1.2+ on RedHat 8:
    1. Install Java 1.4.1+
    2. Symlink the Java plugin shared library into the Mozilla plugin directory If Mozilla segfaults on loading the applet, it's possibly due to copying the library rather than creating a symlink.

Internet Explorer is asking me security questions. What should I reply?

Depending on how the security settings in Microsoft's Internet Explorer™ are configured, Encrypted-Mail users may be prompted to answer a few security questions. Answer, "Yes" when asked the following questions. Answering, "No" to these questions will result in functionality problems.

"Scripts are usually safe. Do you want to allow scripts to run?"
      Click "Yes"

"Do you want to allow scripts to access Java applets?"
      Click "Yes"

"A script is accessing some software (an ActiveX control) on this page which has been marked safe for scrip ting. Do you want to allow this?"
      Click "Yes"

A bug in Microsoft's Internet Explorer™ prompts these dialogue boxes. The bug causes Internet Explorer™ to think Encrypted-Mail's Java applet is an Active X control. Encrypted-Mail does not use ActiveX controls.

Note: Setting the security levels to "Medium" will eliminate all future warnings.

Login problems? Find help here!

You can access login help for Encrypted-Mail by attempting to log in and clicking the "Help" tab that appears at the top right.

    8. When located, select and delete this file. This will force the Sun plugin to download the latest version.

(If the file is not present, you may be encountering other issues)

  • Other possible issues:
    1. Proxies or servers used to connect to the internet which block secure-socket layer (SSL) connections between the client and server. SSL connects over port 443, and is required for https:// connections to the Encrypted-Mail site.
    2. Firewalls may block connections over SSL between the client and server. Adjust or disable firewall to test for possible conflicts.
    3. On Windows 2K/XP, ensure that your account has permission to install new applications (ie: the HushEncryptionEngine™) to your harddrive - Power User or Administrator are suitable. Otherwise, please click on the following link during login:

If you don't have permission to install software on your computer, click here to run the HushEncryptionEngine™ without installing it on your hard drive.

What does "Unable to find public keys.." mean?

This alert indicates the recipient(s) of your message do not have an encryption key, and that mail can therefore not be encrypted. This message typically occurs when sending mail to external email providers such as Hotmail or Yahoo. You can still send a digitally signed message, or have the recipient create a Encrypted-Mail account for encrypted communication.

Account Information
Changing / Resetting your Passphrase

Don't lose your passphrase! The Encrypted-Mail system does not allow Encrypted-Mail employees to access Encrypted-Mail user messages or passphrases, so Encrypted-Mail cannot help users if they misplace or forget their passphrases. So, be sure to WRITE DOWN the passphrase upon sign-up and store it in a safe place, preferably away from your PC.

Note: If you have irretrievably lost your passphrase, the solution is to open a new Encrypted-Mail account and let all your messaging partners know your new address. Remember, too, that there is no way to retrieve old email if you lose your passphrase. There is no way for Encrypted-Mail to change your passphrase, since this operation requires knowledge of your existing passphrase - which is known only to you.

You may change your passphrase at any time by carrying out the following steps:

  1. Click the "Preferences" tab at the top right of your email window.
  2. In the new window that opens, look for the "Change Passphrase" frame near the bottom of the window.
  3. Type in your current passphrase in the "Old passphrase" text box. This is a security measure designed to prevent any unauthorized person from changing your passphrase and thus locking you out of your own account.
  4. Type the passphrase you want to use in future in the "New passphrase" text box.
  5. Re-type your new passphrase in the "Confirm new passphrase" text box.
  6. Remember to make a note of yo ur new passphrase and keep it in a safe place. If you lose it, you're on your own!
  7. Finally, click the "Save" icon on the Preferences toolbar. Your new passphras e is now saved.

You will not be asked for the new passphrase until the next time you log in to your Encrypted-Mail account.

Having changed your passphrase, you can either log off or continue with your current session.

Can I change my username?

The only way Encrypted-Mail users can change their usernames is to register for another Encrypted-Mail address. Encrypted-Mail recommends that users choose unique usernames that they'll remember.

Where can I find information about my subscription(s)?

Once signed in, Premium customers can view their subscription status and history in "Preferences" under "Subscription Information".

How do I renew my subscription(s)?

  • Encrypted-Mail subscriptions are automatically renewed on a yearly basis.
  • Additional subscriptions can be added, and existing subscriptions extended, using the upgrade form.

Account deactivation/cancellation

  • All billing inquiryies should be submitted using the contact form.
  • Standard accounts will be deactivated after 3 weeks of inactivity.
  • The contents of deactivated accounts will be deleted after 6 months.

Spam
How can I deal with spam being sent to my Encrypted-Mail address?

Where can I report spam that involves a Encrypted-Mail address?

Encrypted-Mail has a zero-tolerance policy towards spam. Any spamming activity should be reported to Encrypted-Mail immediately. Full headers are required to verify that the spam originated from Encrypted-Mail, and without them, we will not be able to take action. All abuse complaints should be submitted using the contact form.

Encrypted-Mail Privacy
What personal information is required to sign up?

We don't ask for any personal information when you sign up for a free Encrypted-Mail account. If you choose to purchase a Premium account, we will need a credit card number and address. (We also take PayPal and E-Gold.) You can also register for a Premium account completely anonymously by mailing in your payment. Please contact us for more details.

Privacy is our business! Personal data or individual account data is never shared or sold with third-party businesses. For more information please refer to the Encrypted-Mail Privacy Policy.

How can I be sure that intruders or hackers cannot break into my email?

Encrypted-Mail has made its source code available for inspection and review to anybody who requests it. To request it, please contact Webmaster@Encrypted-Mail.com.

Does Encrypted-Mail have a "back door" that can be accessed by government agencies?

Email, which includes attachments, sent between Encrypted-Mail users is completely encrypted.

What if my message is subpoenaed?

Encrypted-Mail, like any company or individual, is legally bound to respond to court-issued subpoenas. However, because not even Encrypted-Mail can access the encryption keys of individual users, in the case of a subpoena, Encrypted-Mail would only be able to provide the encrypted (coded) version of the transmitted email.

Encrypted-Mail
Does Encrypted-Mail offer digital signatures?

Encrypted-Mail now offers its users the ability to digitally sign messages. This feature allows Encrypted-Mail users to verify with mathematical certainty that the message received originated from the account listed in the address line of their inboxes. Hence, a digital signature lets the recipients of the message know exactly who has sent a particular message.

Here's how to sign and verify Encrypted-Mail messages with a digital signature: To sign a message, simply click the "Sign Message" check-box above the email message window. Once clicked, the Encrypted-Mail system automatically creates a mathematical signature for the message and appends it to the end of the email.

This is why you should sign important messages: it let's the recipient know for certain that the message really is from you and that it has not been maliciously altered while in transit.

Can I sign messages that I send to non-Encrypted-Mail users?

Encrypted-Mail users will be able to send digitally signed messages to anyone in the world with an active email account. However, non-Encrypted-Mail users will need to verify the signature at the following URL: https://www.hushtools.com/verify

  1. To verify a message, go to: https://www.hushtools.com/verify
  2. Copy and paste the entire message into the form.
  3. Click "Verify", and wait for a confirmation message to be displayed.

This will assure non-Encrypted-Mail users that the message originated from the true owner of the indicated Encrypted-Mail address, and that the content (or message) has not been altered in transit.

How does Encrypted-Mail transfer attachments? Is the process secure?

Encrypted-Mail's Attachment Feature offers an end-to-end secure, fully encrypted solution for Encrypted-Mail users who would like to send files and images in addition to an encrypted text message. Attachments sent between Encrypted-Mail users are encrypted and transferred in exactly the same way as normal text messages. The attachment is fully encrypted and is secure between Encrypted-Mail users. No other Web-based service can match the complete security offered by Encrypted-Mail. Unlike other "secure" Web-based email services, the Encrypted-Mail system requires its users' passphrases to open attachments. There is no need to deliver a separate secret key to messaging partners in order to unlock email. Additionally, the Encrypted-Mail system doesn't require Encrypted-Mail users to "go get" - or link to - a message or attachment sitting on a remote server. The entire encryption process is handled seamlessly and without interruption to the user.

Is there any way to create an alias to map several email addresses?

Yes. Simply click the Contacts icon at the top of your email window. This opens the contacts window. Click the New icon just below the Contacts heading. This opens the Create Contact frame. In the Nickname box enter the alias that you want to use for the list. In the Email Address box enter each of the email addresses, separated by commas. Check that you have typed all details correctly, then click Create.

Is there a size restriction on the attachments I send/receive?

Messages that you receive are limited to 25 megabytes in size for all users, including all attachments associated with the message. Regular users can send attachments of up to 1.5 megabytes. Premium users can send attachment of up to 15 megabytes.

How much email can I store? Can I pay for more storage?

Standard Encrypted-Mail accounts come with 2MB of storage space. Encrypted-Mail offers its customers the option of Premium Accounts. With a Encrypted-Mail Premium Account, users receive 32Mb of storage space as well as first access to future upgrades and new features of Encrypted-Mail. A Encrypted-Mail Premium Account costs as little as $2.49 a month. Visit the Premium Accounts page for more information or to sign up. (Note: Account-holders on partner systems such as bingo.com should go to the account upgrade page provided on the partner site.)

Is it possible to communicate with people who aren't using Encrypted-Mail?

Encrypted-Mail users can send email to and receive messages from anyone with an email address. However, communication will be secure only if the sender and the receiver have Encrypted-Mail accounts. If the recipient of the message does not also use the Encrypted-Mail system, email to that person will be sent in plaintext (unencrypted) and so will not be secure.

How can I save Encrypted-Mail messages to my hard drive?

Encrypted-Mail recommends that users copy (Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) the contents of desired plaintext messages into text files or documents on their desktops.

Following the steps below, Encrypted-Mail users will be able to complete the standard process of copying and pasting text between a Encrypted-Mail message and any document editor window installed on their machine.

  1. Left click on your mouse and drag across the text you want to copy.
  2. This will highlight your chosen text.
  3. Release the mouse. Hold the "Ctrl" key down and then press the "C" key, simultaneously. This will copy your text.
  4. To paste the text into your Encrypted-Mail message, click the mouse in the large white text body area of Encrypted-Mail, placing the cursor where the text should begin.
  5. Then hold the "Ctrl" key down and press "V" simultaneously. The text is now pasted in place.

Utilizing the Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V buttons on your keyboard is the only way to copy and paste text out of a Encrypted-Mail email./p>

I use an Internet fax service that directs all incoming faxes to my email address. Can I direct my faxes to Encrypted-Mail?

Encrypted-Mail users can have faxes or email forwarded to their Encrypted-Mail accounts. Encrypted-Mail recommends that forwarded faxes containing logos or images be sent as attachments.

How do I sign up for email paging?

Email paging is a system that notifies one of your other (i.e., non-Encrypted-Mail) email addresses whenever you receive new Encrypted-Mail. To activate email paging, please follow the steps outlined below.

  1. When you have logged into your Encrypted-Mail account, click on the Preferences tab at the top right of your email interface. You'll be asked to enter a NON-Encrypted-Mail email address.
  2. Type in the target email address in the space provided, double check that you have typed it correctly, then click Save on the toolbar.

Thereafter, when you receive email in your Encrypted-Mail inbox, Encrypted-Mail automatically sends your alternate email address a notice of newly arrived Encrypted-Mail. You can disable the email paging facility at any time by checking the checkbox below the space for the alternate email address. Then click Save on the toolbar to confirm your command.

Remember: You must enter a NON-Encrypted-Mail address in the space provided in order for the email notification service to work. It is also important you enter the correct address (one of your other email accounts, for example) to avoid notifying the wrong address of activity in your Encrypted-Mail account.
